“Clash From the Past”
For Clash of Clans’ 10th anniversary, we tricked fans by celebrating 40 years of Clash. We “re-released” made-up games from the 80s, 90s, & 00s, filmed a full fake documentary, made a bunch of era-specific brand collabs, and then just sort of… spread it around the Internet until fans freaked out.
When we “re-released” playable 80s, 90s, and 00s prequels for a mobile game that wasn’t invented until 2012, fans had questions.
But mainly, one question:
Everywhere fans looked, we made sure they’d “proof” that this fake history was real. Including era-specific product collabs with real brands.
And commercials “from the archive”:
We even made a 20-minute documentary to explain why this previously unknown history was just now being uncovered.
And did a Reddit AMA with one of the featured “founders” of the game.
Supercell even updated their company website to include the game’s new, made-up timeline.
And while this whole thing might seem like a mean prank, it was a mean prank fans took and ran with, eager to invent false memories of their own:
